DeviceWare™ is a Christchurch, New Zealand based electronics design company specialising in embedded product development. We will:
- develop the hardware and embedded software for products;
- design for manufacture, and can organise manufacture;
- perform feasibility investigations and rapid proof-of-concept prototyping;
- advise on development processes, requirements capture, configuration management, and project setup; and
- provide mentoring and training.
Over 25 years of hands-on experience across embedded hardware, firmware, and control systems — working as a sole engineer or leading a team. No recruiting overhead, no ongoing cost once the project is complete.

Selected Projects
A selection of past engagements spanning over two decades. Many projects are subject to confidentiality agreements — contact us to discuss your requirements.
Next-Generation Vessel Control System
Autopilot integration for large water-jet ships; hardware-in-the-loop simulator modelling full ship dynamics (engine, gearbox, hydraulics, water-jet thrust); triple-redundant, multi-station control (HamJet/Dynamic Positioning).
DataBird Stratospheric Glider
Autonomous unmanned glider launched from weather balloons for meteorological research. Sold to universities internationally. Cited in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (2014).
12 MW Regenerative Converter Control
Control software for a 12-pulse thyristor-bridge converter recovering regenerative braking energy from trams into the AC grid. PLL-synchronised sampling, modular PID and Bode-analysis instrumentation, 32-bit combinational fault handler.
Autonomous Drone Docking System
All dock-side hardware and embedded software for a solar-panel-integrated autonomous landing dock — flip mechanism, drone capture and locking, charging system, and cellular telemetry.
Autonomous Cable-Pod Transit System
Motion control software for an autonomous electric pod transit system — cable-guided pods connecting transit hubs to nearby destinations over short distances. The system was subsequently granted a licence for a 2 km public trial.
Camera Gimbal Control System
Three-axis full-rotation gimbal control for professional camera systems (drone, handheld, cable). Rotation-matrix and quaternion kinematics, IMU fusion, Kalman filtering, raised-cosine acceleration planning.
Grid-Tied Solar Inverter
Isolated DC leakage-current detector for a grid-tied solar inverter. Novel isolated SPI interface, biquad IIR filter on a low-cost PIC (no hardware multiplier), plus MPPT algorithm implementation.
Universal Touch-Screen Remote Platform
Lead Software Architect on a universal touch-screen infrared remote for the high-end consumer market. Led a team of seven. The platform shipped as three OEM products for major consumer electronics brands.
T803 Radio–Telephone Interface
DSP-based product interfacing radio equipment to telephone lines — from initial design through to production, then a second enhancement pass. Fixed-point notch and bandpass IIR filters designed for numerical stability across the full signal range; guard-tone detection sensitive to −40 dBm against −20 dBm voice signals. Enhancement revision replaced AGC/Mu-law codec with a linear codec, greatly simplifying the DSP filter design, and demonstrated adaptive echo-cancellation.
Mooring System Simulation
Simulation of automated mooring machines for vessels from bulk carriers to Channel ferries. Inverse kinematics, hydraulic circuit modelling, multi-machine control strategies validated against recorded wave data.
Wireless Mesh Sensor Network
Co-founded a startup developing wireless mesh sensor nodes for precision environmental monitoring, initially targeting vineyard management. Designed the mesh radio protocol and sensor node firmware. Technology subsequently acquired; the successor company listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.
IoT Cloud Connectivity
Enabling industrial power systems to connect to the cloud. MicroPython development across MQTT, HTTP, SSL/TLS, WebSockets, and BLE stacks on resource-constrained hardware.
Medical IV Infusion Pump
Embedded software for an intravenous infusion pump medical device, working within regulatory and quality system requirements.
Ventilator Smart-Fabric Controller
Flexible control system tracking breath-cycles and driving a moisture-absorbing smart fabric to prevent dry mouth in ventilated patients.
SolarElement Direct-Connect PV Water Heater
Invented a water heating element for direct connection to photovoltaic panels — eliminating the need for an expensive inverter equipment. Thermal modelling in FreeCAD optimised heat transfer from IGBT junctions to water. Provisional patent filed.
IP-Connected Talking Signs
Embedded software for ethernet-connected bus-timetable displays. Network client with FTP snippet management, a custom fault-tolerant flash file system, and voice snippet playback.
